Is it a bad idea to wear your Invisalign aligners while swimming? In this video, Diamond Braces Chief Clinical Officer and orthodontist Dr. Oleg Drut explains whether it’s safe to wear Invisalign aligners in the pool or the ocean.
Can I Wear My Clear Aligners While Swimming?
You sure can!
Your Invisalign aligners are molded to your unique teeth. That means they’re designed to fit snugly. You don’t need to worry about them slipping out.
They are not impacted by chlorine or saltwater, either. Invisalign aligners are made of patented SmartTrack material, a uniquely designed clear composite for use in orthodontic aligners. It’s sturdy and flexible, ideal for treating teeth with orthodontic care, and molded to fit comfortably around your teeth. The material is sturdy and won’t be damaged by the chlorine in pools or the saltwater in the ocean. Just remember not to drink any because it’s not good for your health!

What Should I do if I Lose My Aligners While Swimming?
If you do lose your aligner while swimming, it might be because you were playing with it with your tongue and knocked it out of your mouth. Be sure to keep your aligners in 22 hours a day and not fiddle with them while they’re over your teeth.
If you do lose an aligner, there are several options. Always keep your last set of aligners to use as a backup; wear those until you receive your next aligners. If they are too tight, you may be able to skip ahead to the next set of aligners.
If that’s not a possibility, then you can come in for a consultation and be fitted again for the set of aligners you lost. It will cost a little bit extra, so it’s best not to lose them in the first place! Learn more about what to do if you lose an aligner.
